If you are reading this, then you are already a step closer to your dream of becoming a high class Copywriter.

According to forbes you can easily make 6 figures by mastering the art of Copywriting and you can start from scratch today. Here are simple 5 steps to kickstart your journey.

  • Research the Copywriting industry
  • Start your learning process
  • Have a checklist
  • Find your niche
  • Write everyday

Research the Industry

This is one mistake a lot of professionals make and you shouldn’t be one of them. You have to research any industry you want to get into.

Some people jump into shining objects (shiny object syndrome) without proper research and after a year or two give up because they neglected the most important part of the process.

You must research the industry. Find out if it is the right industry for you. Find out the market share, what competitors in the industry are doing, what works and what doesn’t.

The way I look at it, with the right research you are already 10 steps ahead of your peers in the industry.

Ensure you do your own research before committing your time and energy to anything.

Start your learning process

After you have done your research, it is time to start learning. You know your schedule better than anyone else. So you can still keep your job while learning and nurturing your Copywriting skill on the side.

Here’s how: Devote an hour or two each day to learn about Copywriting. It is up to you to figure out how much time you want to dedicate to it, but not less than an hour a day.

Start by reading Copywriting books, watch a lot of educational videos. Think ‘selling’ (Read and study sales books).

Another good resource will be swiped files. Swiped files are a compilation of successful marketing and advertising materials which have been tested and proven to work over the years.

You want to study swipe files by understanding the psychology behind each successful advertising campaign to get a glimpse of how you should write yours. Check here for swiped files.

You need to have a checklist

A checklist is simply a list of items which serves as a reminder to you.

Every high income Copywriter needs a checklist. It helps you write with more clarity and speed.

By using a checklist, you can constantly ask yourself if your Copy ticks all the right boxes.

A simple checklist can have questions like,

  • A well defined avatar
  • Customer pain point
  • Customer motive
  • Well defined USP

Now you have an idea of what a checklist comprises. It is up to you to build yours tailored for your industry.

Find your niche

A niche is your industry of choice. What industry suits you best? Where do you think your Copywriting will perform better? Most times it is linked to your passion.

For instance, you are a dog lover, cat lover etc. You may start thinking of writing in those industries because it fits naturally with you.

Are you into tech? Fintech Copywriting is on high demand. Finding your niche is about discovering what you love the most and then finding out how to provide your Copywriting services to the industry.

Write everyday

Let’s face it. You will never become great at Copywriting if you don’t practise everyday. You have to write everyday.

Writing everyday makes you understand the art of Copywriting quicker. Now, you might be thinking of how to do that because you don’t have any clients to write for.

Well, a simple way to practise is by picking a niche, choosing a topic and then writing based on that topic.

Still not sure? Here’s an example.

Lets say, I choose the dog niche. I will open my google docs or word document, write a topic on maybe dog training or best food for dogs (2022).

Research the topic and then write. I will do that at least twice a week, experimenting with different topics.

This helps to set your foot in the door. When you finally start reaching out to clients, you have samples of your writing to show to them.

You can also decide to write for free when starting out just to gain experience and practise. The goal is to write as often as you can to start building your portfolio.

Conclusion

When I discovered Copywriting I became obsessed with Copywriting because it was my passion.

You have to love what you are doing if you want to create an outstanding life for yourself. The process might not be fun in some cases, but if you love it you will persist.

With the steps you have, you can start your journey to becoming one of the most sought after Copywriters.

Knowledge isn’t power unless it is applied. You have to take action with what you have learned today if you want to be at a different place than you currently are. Stay blessed!!!
